Apply tactic-level targeting

Use tactic-level targeting to fine-tune campaign performance. By default, illumin auto-applies journey-level targeting to each tactic. You can override those settings to get more control over audience reach and delivery.

If you need a refresher on the different targeting options, read this article.

  1. Open a campaign on the Canvas (new experience).
  2. Confirm the New experience toggle is on.
  3. Click the campaign block. A new window displays.
  4. Go to the left-hand menu.
  5. Expand the campaign folder.

🟦  The New experience toggle is hidden for illumin clients who joined after August 25, 2025.

By default, the page displays Journey targeting. If there are no custom tactic settings yet, only journey-level targeting appears in the table.

  2. Click the pencil icon.

After you edit one or more targeting variables, the table displays a Custom targeting field.

  1. Go to the Custom targeting field.
  2. Click the Reset all custom targeting button.
  3. Click the Reset button in the confirmation pop-up.

FAQs

How does tactic-level targeting work in illumin?

Tactic-level targeting overrides journey-level targeting for a specific tactic. By default, illumin applies journey targeting to every tactic. Marketers can edit individual targeting variables in the Targeting tab to customize audience reach and delivery for that tactic only.

Why does the Targeting tab only show journey targeting?

The Targeting tab shows only journey targeting because no custom tactic settings exist yet. illumin displays journey-level rules until marketers edit a variable. Once at least one variable changes, the table adds a Custom targeting field.

How do marketers apply custom targeting to a tactic?

Marketers apply custom targeting by opening the tactic, selecting the Targeting tab, and editing a variable in the table. After they click the pencil icon and save changes, illumin flags the tactic with a Custom targeting field to indicate an override.

How do marketers reset tactic-level targeting to journey defaults?

Marketers reset tactic-level targeting by clicking Reset all custom targeting in the Custom targeting field. illumin removes all overrides and restores the original journey-level targeting rules across the tactic.

Why is the New experience toggle not visible in some accounts?

The New experience toggle is hidden for illumin clients who joined after August 25, 2025. In those accounts, the platform runs only the New experience, so marketers do not see a toggle option in the Canvas view.
